Ostriches spared for now
#1
An Ostrich farm in BC has been under a cull order since avian flu was detected. Some birds have died and some birds have recovered,
The current protocol is to cull all the birds if avian flu is detected.
The people who own the farm have fought the order because the ostriches are part of an antibody study and they have unique genetics.
A judge has granted a temporary reprieve while the case is studied.

I am glad they have halted things for now.
Four hundred ostriches on a farm that are being studied for scientific purposes are not the same as a factory farm with thousands of chickens houses in cramped quarters. The chickens are all infected and they do pose a danger to humans and other birds. The ostriches live very differently. Also when they became infected,
some birds died, but other recovered. That is something that should be studied. Certainly the birds who recovered would have antibodies. That has possibilities for future vaccines. The birds are not totally safe yet, but at least there will be a review and their case will be heard.
