In the late 1980s the US Navy, while monitoring oceans sounds, picked up a whale sound that was unique. It was too high for any of the Baleen Whales.
It was too low for any of the toothed whales. They have determined that the sounds come from one individual. They have never heard another one like it and they have never seen the whale. Is it a hybrid of two species? Is it a new species? Why is there only one? How long will it live?

This is a mystery. It is one we might never solve. There is definitely more to our oceans than we realize.
It is sad that the whale is alone. Maybe he is the last of his species. I wonder if we will ever know.
