Ojibwe Spirit Horses are native to Ontario. They very nearly become extinct, but 4 mares were saved in a daring rescue. Their numbers are still few and their gene pool is limited. Every breeding must be carefully planned. With careful planning and work, there are now 200 of the horses. Sagehill farms took in 3 mares from one location and a stallion from another location. They are overjoyed to have two births.
These are special horses. They are not descended from the horses the Europeans brought to North America. They are very different.
It is important that we preserve them and continue to increase their numbers.
Two new births is a good sign that the breed is strong and will survive.

Lunenberg, Nova Scotia has seasonal horse dawn carriages. They have just proposed new bylaws to protect the horses in the extreme hot weather.
The new bylaws are more clear about the need for rest and hydration. They also specify when it would be too hot for the horses to work.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scot...-9.7092331

There were previous bylaws, but the conditions have changed. In the past we did not have such extended extreme hot spells.
The bylaws need to allow protection for horses under the new conditions.
Lunenberg is clearly being forward thinking about changing animal welfare needs.
Other places are going to need to assess and change their bylaws. It is not okay to work horses under extreme hot weather conditions.
In some cases humans should not be out in the extreme heat. If we are not going to do anything about climate change, then we are going to have to learn to live with it safely.

She was alone in her field without care. Eventually she grew so weak she collapsed. Someone noticed her and called for help. Athens Happy House animal sanctuary showed up and rescued Marianthi. At first it looked like it was too late, but gradually the horse has regained strength. It was two months before she could stand.
Now she can walk and is clearly recovering.
I am glad the horse was found in time. It would have been so sad for her to die alone in a field, uncared for.
I guess there is a lesson here. If you know of someone who died, just check to see if their pets have been cared for. A herd of horses has grazing rights along the cliff. People stop to see them. The horses have been there for generations. Now the National Trust wants them moved. The farmer as been given until December to move them.
People are not happy about this and they are fighting back. Health and safety concerns have been cited as the reason for wanting the horses moved.
The issues can probably be resolved without forcing the horses off the land. Certainly the farmer has not been given enough time to sort things out.
If the problem is one rowdy stallion, it seems a bit drastic to make all the horses move. If it is a matter of numbers, probably some of the younger ones could be rehomed. I hope this is resolved in a way that respects the horses needs.

We have had a lot of snow in some parts of North America. Not everybody likes it, but Theo, the miniature horse, loves it. He was out there running through the snow having a wonderful time.

I half agree with Theo. It was fun when the snow first fell. If I could run around like Theo I would probably still be thrilled.
Getting to work in the city is not so much fun. So think you to Theo for reminding me of how much fun snow can be. He really is having fun.

This is a terrible disaster. It is far from over. People are doing everything they can to rescue animals and take them in.
We will never know all the heroes that are out there, but there are many. Just being willing to take in hundreds of horses is heroic.
Canada exports live horses to places like Japan where they are slaughtered for human consumption. The horses endure horrific conditions during the transport.
They exceed the legal limit for time without food and water. Many actually die in transport.
Liberal MP, Tim Louis introduced a private members bill, C-355 which would ban live shipping of horses for slaughter. The bill has passed the House of Commons. Now it is in the hands of the Senate. If it isn't passed before the next election it will be lost and they will have to start over again.

https://dailyhive.com/canada/canada-hors...-slaughter

It is really very simple. Shipping live horses is very cruel. The animals suffer. We don't want to see animals suffer, so we should want to end live shipping.
Most Canadians want it to stop. The senate should work to pass this bill quickly. I realize the senate never does anything quickly, but just this once they should make and exception.

Diesel the donkey went missing on a family camping trip five years ago. He was finally spotted living with a herd of elk. He looks well and happy and the family is going to let him stay with the elk.

It is an odd situation. He is a pet and he should be rescued. However, he seems to have found a life that works for him.
I never thought of a donkey and elk getting along, but it seems to be working.

Maybe they could visit Diesel and let him make the choice. If he comes to them it might be a sign that he wants to be rescue. If he ignores them, then let him stay with his elk friends.

Przewalski's horses have been absent from Kazakhstan for 200 years. The species itself was nearly lost to extinction when the last hose was killed in the wild.
The efforts of Prague Zoo and other zoos around the world kept the species alive and increased their numbers enough to return them to the wild. There is now a healthy population in Mongolia. Six mares and one stallion were released this time. More will be released later. The horses will help stabilize the ecosystem. They spread seeds and fertilize the land. They help water get into the soil when they dig up plants.
Over the next five years there will be a total of 40 horses released.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/...kazakhstan

This is a conservation story that repeats itself around the world in many different ways. A key species is returned to an area and the whole damaged ecosystem begins to heal. The wolves in Yellowstone National Park, the buffalo on the North American Prairies and many more species have worked ecological magic when they are returned. It will be amazing to watch this transformation that place. It might start slow, but the horses will heal the land.
I look forward to hearing about future releases of the horses and the effects they have on their environment.
