Maybe cows have been using tools all along. Maybe a lot of other animals use tools and we haven't noticed. We need to expand our thinking and really look at the animals around us. We tend to see what we expect to see. It is time we looked at what is really happening.

Most of the focus is on what the farmers have lost. There is not much thought given to what the cows have suffered.
Sadly we are so used to hearing about wildfires we don't really react anymore. Most of what I heard in the news did not even mention animals.
Cattle would have been so vulnerable. Because of fences they would not have been able to escape.

I don't know what could have been done. Certainly rethinking how we farm so animals are not vulnerable would be a good start.

The escape worked! It must have taken some desperation to climb a water slide and then to go down it. It was enough to save the cow's life.
This this time there is a reaction. Their license has been suspended. There could be criminal charges.
The BC SPCA is pressuring for independent oversight of dairy farms. They want cameras installed in farms and slaughterhouses. That way the actual treatment of cows can be reviewed.
It is good to know that Joaquin's speech is followed up by actions. It does make me wonder what happens to cows who give birth in transit to a slaughterhouse. What happens to the calves? Do they not check for pregnancy before they ship a cow? Things ended well for Liberty and Indigo. What about all the other cows that end up in the same situation, but have no one to help them?

All the cows were just running for their lives. They could tell what what was going on at the slaughter house. They were aware of the danger. It is sad that one was shot. People do not know how to act around animals. It is wonderful that the last cow is going to a sanctuary. Wouldn't it be even better if all the cows were saved.
There is some talk of rescuing the other cows. It would be wonderful if that could happen. If I hear anything I will post it.
Burning barns and animal deaths is an ongoing fairly frequent problem. That tells me that the fire codes for barns are not that good. There really needs to be a serious review of past fires and some clear recommendations on how to prevent future fires. A lot of barn fires are electrical in nature. Maybe barns need new standards for wiring and heating. Certainly there need to be fire doors and sprinklers. There also should be a plan to get the animals out alive. It is too heart breaking to keep reading about animals trapped in burning barns.

Life With Pigs Farm Animal Sanctuary opens up its kitchen window and serves carrots to its cows like a drive thru window. The pigs are smart, they sneak in through the kitchen for their treats. The video is cute. One cow definitely understands the system and gets the bulk of the carrots.
It is sweet to think that there is a sanctuary that gives its animals treats through the kitchen window. Clearly the animals are much loved and the people take joy in caring for them.

A shipment of more than 850 cows left Spain months ago. It was feared that they had bluetongue so they were not allowed to dock. They have lived in terrible conditions ever since. There were times when they didn't even have food or water. Now after all this time they are in terrible condition. No one wants them and they will probably all be slaughtered.
It is not clear if they ever had bluetongue.

Yet another reason why shipping live cattle is wrong. Sending animals to slaughter is bad. Holding them in horrible conditions for months and then slaughtering them is unbelievably bad. The animals have suffered and they they will be killed. If they are in a hurry to kill them, I doubt it will be that humane.

There is a second ship with 1800 cattle on board. Their future doesn't look too good either.
It is way past time to end live transport of cattle or any other animals.

Little JD was found tied to a wall at 3 days old. He had clearly been taken from his mother and lacked the basic immunity from her milk. He has had some set backs and needed medication, but he has pulled through and is now a happy lively little calf.

Road to Rescue Animal Sanctuary has been responsible for his care. They are committed to letting JD live out his whole life at the sanctuary.
Now they are fundraising so they can buy more land for JD and any other calves they need to take in.

https://people.com/pets/calf-found-chain...sanctuary/

JD is certainly the cutest little calf. It just seems so cruel to take a baby from his mom and not even try to look after him.
I suppose he was being left to die. When you look at him and how full of life he is it is hard to imagine who could be so callous and uncaring.
I am glad there are sanctuaries like Road to Rescue Animal Sanctuary. Without them JD would be dead. He wouldn't even have a name.
