It is Fat Bear Week. This time of the year the bears in Alaska eat a lot of salmon to fatten up for winter.
A fat bear is a healthy bear who will survive the winter. So humans started watching them to see which bear would be the fattest.
We can vote online for who we think is the fattest. There are twelve bears in competition right now.
Two time winner, Grazer is definitely a contender this year as is Chonk. Don't count out Floatato who looks like a giant floating potato in the water.

Meet the bears.

The salmon run is good this year so they are all pretty fat.
I think Grazer and Chonk look like the front runners again this year.
They now have a junior fat bear contest so younger bears can compete.

Ghadhimai is an animal slaughter that takes place in Nepal every 5 years. For two days people will gather outside and watch as thousands of animals are hacked to death. The animals are not well cared for before the slaughter. During the slaughter, animals are brutally killed. Those that survive the longest get to watch the others die until it is their turn.

There are protests every time the festival takes place. Sometimes protesters even save some animals. Globally the slaughter is condemned.
The Nepal government is against it. Now they need to outlaw it. While it is still allowed it will still go on. There always seem to be people willing to commit acts of animal cruelty. I would worry about the kind of people who take place in a slaughter like this. I would worry about the fact that they bring young children to watch the slaughter. What would that do to a child?

The 101 Freeway in Los Angeles will be closed at night for weeks while a wildlife bridge is built. It will span 10 lanes of traffic and allow wildlife to move safely from the Santa Monica Mountains into the Sime Hills of the Santa Susanna Range. The project began in 2022 and will be completed in 2025.
The final bridge will be covered in soil and plants to blend in with the natural surroundings. This will be the largest wildlife crossing built in the USA so far.

This is a remarkable project. It will make a tremendous difference to the wildlife in the area. In particular it will help the mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains. They have a very limited gene pool. This bridge will allow them to wander and increase their genetic diversity.
Many species will benefit, even reptiles and insects. Even ants will be able to use the bridge.
This is an amazing project and I hope its success will inspire the building of other wildlife bridges.

It is almost time for the Christmas bird count. For over 120 years bird watchers in North and South America have been counting birds at Christmas.
This gives us an idea of how bird populations are doing.

Wherever you are there is probably a site where you can register your own bird count.
It will be interesting to see how the bird counts are for 2023. We always hope that the bird populations are healthy and strong.

They are calling it a Canine Library event. It is actually sponsored by the Vancouver Public Library, Vancouver Park Board, Paws 4 Stories and the St John's Ambulance. You don't actually get to check out a dog and take it home, but you do get to spend time with a therapy dog, in the park, reading to it.
This is an extension of the Paws 4 Stories program that has children improve their reading skills by reading to shelter dogs.

This sounds like a beautiful event. Picture sitting in a park, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine with a dog beside you, while you read to it.
I wish we had something like this in Toronto.
I bet if we had dogs like this on our transit system things would run much smoother.

The west coast salmon are not always making it to their spawning grounds. That has an impact on the salmon, but it also has an impact on the ecosystem that relies on the dead salmon after they have spawned. A group has formed to bring dead salmon and throw them in the river. It doesn't replace the spawning, but it provides for the rest of the ecosystem. Animals feast on the dead fish. The remains provide nutrients for the river and the plants that grow along the river.

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/video/news/dea...5c09b9da06

It is actually a really good idea. It helps keep an ecosystem healthy in the absence of one of its key components.

I know they made a fun event of it and that is why people keep coming back. I just wish they would have treated the salmon differently. They should have been honored somehow for their contribution to the lives of other creatures.
