Their numbers are low and protecting this area gives them a safe space for egg laying.

The money will be used by local rescue groups to help feral cats. It will cover trap, neuter, release program costs and veterinary costs.
The cats will mostly stay feral, but they will have better lives. They can live in smaller stable colonies when they are not producing endless litters of kittens. They can be fed and given medical care. They can have happy lives.
What a generous donation! It is given in a way that can really help a local cat problem. Feral cats can have miserable lives, just struggling to survive.
Providing support for what they need changes everything. Small, cared for feral cat colonies are manageable and they can be healthy and happy.
I hope more cat lovers find ways to help out like this.

Fernanda now lives at the Galapagos National Park's Giant Tortoise Breeding center. They are searching the island for a male of her species.
Fernanda needs a male if the species is going to survive. We have been collecting specimens from places and we may be the reason why these species are lost.
Moving Fernanda might help the species, but it also might be the end of it. We don't know yet.

Anthony Waddle loved frogs as a child. He still loves them, but now he can help them.
Frogs globally are in trouble. In particular whole populations of frogs are being wiped out by the chytrid fungus.
He created frog saunas to raise their temperatures in winter and keep them safe from the fungus. The frog saunas were made from bricks and they worked.
Now he is doing more to help frogs survive.

His research is complex and he is still trying new ideas. Raising frogs, vaccinating them against the chytrid fungus and releasing them, is giving frogs a chance to survive. He is working with gene replacement and transgenetic frogs that would be able to resist fungal infection. The goal is conservation and species survival.
He is working in Australia right now, but the goal is to help frogs globally.
He is using synthetic biology and it has its risks, but the situation of frogs globally is critical, and this could mean the difference between frog survival and frog extinction.

He turned 16 this year and the staff wanted to make it special for him. In the wild he would be getting close to the end of his life.
With the care he is getting he could have many more years.
The Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat is a special place. It provides a place for Polar bears that need care and cannot be released to the wild.

Bridget Bardot actress and animal activist just died at the age of 91. She is the first celebrity to react to the Canadian Seal hunt. She raised public awareness of the hunt. Back then they were still killing the fluffy white newborns. They literally clubbed the helpless days old baby seals so people could wear the fluffy white fur.
Bridget made that fact public and the market for the seal pelts dropped. They stopped killing the white newborns.
She wanted to see the hunt stopped completely before she died. She did live to see it decline.

Seal products are banned in Europe. She didn't finish the job, but she got it moving in the right direction.

The Canadian government still subsidizes the hunt, but it is a much smaller hunt.
Perhaps her death will raise awareness again and be the thing that is needed to stop the annual slaughter.

Sheila Colla did remarkable work as a bee advocate, in particular she fought for our native wild bees in Ontario.
Sadly she died suddenly of cancer at the age of 43. In the short time she had, she did much.
I will let others who knew her describe her work.

In the few years she had, she did so much for bees. Her work will help bees everywhere.
She is definitely missed.
All of us need to keep up the work by doing what we can for bees wherever we are.
Even if all you can do is a small thing, if we all do something it adds up.

In 2003 there were only 22 marmots left. it didn't look good for the species. The Marmot Recovery Foundation has been hard at work.
Now there are 427 Marmots in the wild.
This is a conservation story that is working towards a happy ending. By breeding the marmots in captivity and releasing them, they were able to overcome some of the effects of habitat loss. They have also worked towards habitat restoration. It is a work in progress, but it is definitely going in the right direction.
Some day the Marmots will be safely reestablished and their habitat will be restored. Conservation efforts do work.
