The Toronto Humane Society has long term plans to open affordable vet clinics in the city of Toronto.
Today they opened the first clinic. It is not far from the actual shelter. The others will be spread out over the city, where they are needed.
The clinic will provide a number of services such as vaccinations and neutering and other general veterinary care.
The Toronto Humane Society is expanding beyond being a shelter for adoptable animals. They have a food bank to help people in need keep their pets when money is an issue. They have classes in animal care. The goal now is to keep the pets with their families even when times are tough. We understand now how important the human/animal bond is and how much both parties benefit from it. Having an affordable vet clinic is a big step forward.

They just had an experience of someone dropping off a lot of stuff when the shelter was not receiving items. It was a truckload of stuff and it was all garbage.
Seriously, it was garbage. It will cost the shelter money to dispose of the garbage.
It wasn't really a donation. They were using the shelter for free garbage disposal of things they didn't want to pay to get rid of.
It ended up costing the shelter. That is a terrible thing to do. If you can't help the shelter, at least leave them alone.
They don't need that kind of help.
It goes without saying, but I will say it anyhow, don't drop off junk at any other charity.
The shelter has long outgrown its building and is in the process of relocating. The hope is to build a whole new facility suited to their current needs and future programs. This donation will definitely help with that.
This is a tremendous gift at a time when the shelter really needs it. Animal shelters are all being strained by increasing animal surrenders.
Costs have increased. Many shelters are in aging buildings that no longer meet their needs. For one shelter the dream of a better building has become more possible.
Thank you to the generosity of Klaus Bytzek.

Tango's Lead Canine Rescue and Sanctuary gives dogs another chance. They take the dogs from other shelters that have behavioral issues and even a bite history.
They old dogs and dogs with health issues. They have a staff of 50 volunteers that have taken in hundreds of dogs. Many come from kill shelters and this really is their last chance. They take northern dogs. All the dogs live in foster homes until they are ready for adoption. After adoption they will still be there for the dog in its new home, offering the new owners any help they need.
This is a dog rescue that is really needed. Too many dogs are lost because they can't cope with shelter life or they have had a bad start.

Takahe are a flightless bird native to New Zealand. They were thought to be extinct. They were rediscovered in 1948.
An endangered species program has brought their number up to 500. Hatching even one chick helps the whole species.
The parents were thought to be infertile, but they surprized everyone by hatching out and caring for a chick.

They are such an unusual looking bird. You can see the dinosaur connection in this very ancient species.
This is another conservation effort that is working. They have gone from presumed to be extinct to having 500 birds.
Someday, maybe they can occupy their whole original territory. That would be an amazing success.

Sadly and happily pet food banks are a reality. Sadly, because people really need them. Happily because they are there to help people who couldn't keep their pets without help.
Many places have pet food banks. Winnipeg Humane society is one of them. In April of this year they had 88 people come to them and in October 301 people needed help. If I search shelters in other cities, I am going to see the same results.
With Christmas coming The Winnipeg Humane Society is doing special hampers for cats and dogs. They want to fill them with food, treats and toys.
Even pets who "use" the food bank deserve something special for Christmas.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/winnipeg/article/...-bank-use/

Shelters recognize how much good pets bring into people's lives and they are working to keep people and pets together.
If you need help, shelters are glad to be of assistance. If you want to help and are in a position to help, your local humane society or rescue group would love to have your help. You can give money, it is always welcome. You can give supplies, also welcome. You can give your time as a volunteer. Anything you can do will help get us through the rough times. We need our pets and our pets need us.

Six lions were being held at a roadside zoo in Quebec. They were being held in a shed.
Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Rosseau, Ontario took the lions in and provided them with temporary care.
Three of the lions are now at the Wildcat Sanctuary in Minnesota. The rest of the lions will live out their lives at Turpentine Creek Wildlife refuge in Arkansas.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/barrie/article/ne...sanctuary/

The cats are safe now and being well looked after, but this really highlights how much we need to regulate roadside zoos.
Animals like lions are not being cared for properly. They are just being exploited for the money they can bring in.
Canada was bringing in legislation to deal with exotic animals and roadside zoos. Sadly it didn't pass before the election. The whole process has to be started again.

It is wonderful that there are sanctuaries and refuges that can take these animals in, but they should never have been there in the first place.

Four of the donkeys were kept together and have been transferred to Bransby Horses. There with the help of older donkeys, they are learning to be donkeys.

An animal shelter chanced to check its parcel drop of box near its driveway. They found a taped up box with 8 very young puppies. Their eyes were still closed.
Since they don't always check the parcel box, the puppies were at risk of not being found in time. If someone plans to drop off an animal like that they should alert the shelter to check the box. Fortunately the puppies are doing well and can be adopted in about8 weeks.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/london/article/lo...drop-offs/

That could have ended badly. The puppies could have been in the box for days. The weather could have turned cold or hot unexpectedly.
Just leaving animals like that is too risky. If you really can't keep a pet, at least give it a chance. Either bring it right to the shelter or at least let the shelter know where the animal is. Too much depends on luck when you just leave an animal out of sight in a drop box.
