It is that time of year when the bears wake up. At the Grouse Mountain Refuge, Grinder and Coola emerged from their 25 dormancy.
The two bears were born in 2001 and were orphaned. They were rescued and ended up at Grouse Mountain Refuge. There were no programs then to return orphans to the wild so they have stayed at the refuge.
There have been some issues with the grizzly bears in the area and they are searching for an aggressive bear who attacked a group of people last fall.
They are doing what they can to coexist with the local bear population.
It must be exciting seeing the bears emerge each year.
I am sure I read about Grinder and Coola when thy were rescued. I am happy to hear they have done well and are leading happy lives.
I hope they sort out the issue of the aggressive grizzly. It was an unexpected attack and the bear can be moved to a remote area if necessary.

There is a movement to release Beavers back into the English countryside. Beavers have been released and done well. Some beavers have dispersed from those areas. Gradually beavers are returning. The Norfolk beaver is settling in and preparing for winter. No one knows where this beaver came from. Was s/he released without a permit? Is it possible the beaver naturally dispersed from an existing release site? Who knows. The beaver is there and it looks like it is staying.
This is a really good sign that the beaver release is working. It looks like beavers have taken over the beaver reintroduction program. They are going to start appearing where they want to be. That would be great. They could spread at a rate that works for the environment. They could spread to where they think they belong. I hope that is what is happening. I would trust them to get it right. Beavers know what they are doing.

They cut some fencing and the moose was able to return to the woods.
Both actions are wrong. If a baby seal is alone, leave it alone. Most likely its mother has gone to feed herself. She will be back.
Interfering can prevent mom from returning to her pup.
If the pup is in distress or has been abandoned, the proper authorities for the area should be called.
They will know how to rescue and help the pup.
Every year well intentioned people interfere with baby animals. They think they are rescuing them, but what they do can result in the baby's separation from its mother and even its death. Nature knows how to care for its babies. Leave them alone and they will be fine.

This had a happy and sad ending. One raccoon was rescued, but the other was dead. The real issue is the open pipe the raccoons crawled into. If that pipe had been covered, the raccoons couldn't have crawled inside. We need to look around our properties and make sure there are no places where little animals could get trapped.
There are coyotes in some parts of Toronto, so of course there are conflicts with humans.
The city has put up signs in the real coyote hot spot. The signs are controversial because they call the coyotes our neighbours.
Some people have been injured and some dogs have been killed. The city is trying to study the situation and find solutions.
Right now people are in two camps, the coyotes were here first or we should cull the coyotes.
The controversial signs are trying to teach people how to deal with coyote encounters.
One problem is people who put out food for the coyotes. They get used to being fed and they get used to humans.
Neither is good. People also go out with their dog, alone, at a time when the coyotes would be out.
Maybe walk the dog at a different time of maybe dog walkers could go out in groups.

We can learn to live with coyotes. We live with raccoons and squirrels and they are everywhere.
There are not that many coyotes, they are not everywhere and they are only out at certain times of the day.
We need to change because the coyotes won't. They are just doing what is normal to them.

There is so much good happening out there that we don't know about. This sanctuary is out there doing things to help bears and have been in operation for 32 years. They have helped a lot of bears over the years. For these two cubs it means that they have a chance to live instead of starving to death in the woods.
Maybe the logging people should be more careful. The woods are the bear's home. They could wait a little longer and the bears would have left their winter dens.

Logging activity has destroyed the den of a black bear with young cubs. She has gone from the area. The cubs might be 8 weeks old. They have their eyes open, but they would have no chance of surviving on their own. So they are now living at Bear With Us Sanctuary. It is their hope to raise the cubs and return them to where they were born.

A pair of cougar kittens were seen in Alberta's Bow River Valley on their own. Their mother has been killed and they are not old enough to survive on their own.
They were trapped and are now at the Calgary Zoo where they can be properly cared for. They are not going to be on display and they will only be at the zoo until
a more suitable placement can be found.
Sadly, Alberta allows licensed hunters to kill cougars. The kittens mother was technically a legal kill.

https://globalnews.ca/news/11024027/coug...ow-valley/

Don't you love how they will fuss over poor little orphaned cougar kittens at the same time as they allow hunters to orphan the kittens in the first place.
Maybe we should be finding other ways to get along with wildlife other than killing them.
What are we doing wrong that there are "too many" cougars.
If we stopped killing their food source we might find we have just the right number of cougars.

I am glad that the kittens could be rescued. I don't know what kind of a future they have, but at least they have a chance.

Salthaven West Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center cares for a number of bats every year. It is a lot of work and very time consuming.
The clinic manager got the idea to prepare the bats and put them into hibernation. They have a big frig that is temperature and humidity controlled.
Bats can hibernate for months each winter. These bats are checked once a month during hibernation season. It is easier on the people caring for them and it is much healthier for the bats. The ultimate goal is to release the bats to the wild. Hibernation has health benefits and it imitates a more natural life.

https://www.ckom.com/2025/01/09/game-cha...n-program/

Helping the bats hibernate is brilliant. They will be more ready for release in the wild if they have kept their cycles closer to normal.

The sign on the frig is needed, but it is also funny. You wouldn't expect to see a frig full of bats. Opening the door would be bad for the bats.
It might not be so good for an unsuspecting human.
