Usually we remember that chocolate is toxic, but so are coffee and tea. Onions and garlic yes, but I didn't realize avocados were toxic.
We know about artificial sweeteners, but do we realize how many foods have artificial sweeteners in them.
I knew about grapes, but I didn't think about raisons. Alcohol should be obvious, but it is easy to be careless and leave a glass of beer where a dog can drink it.
They like the taste. I definitely didn't know about macadamia nuts.
We are going to eat these foods, but we need to be careful that we don't poison our friends.

A friend came home with groceries and put the bags on the floor. Her little dog pulled out a bag of chocolate chips and ate the whole thing.
When she turned to look the dog had the empty bag in front of her. Good thing the vet was nearby. The dog was sick, but she survived. It could have ended badly.
It took minutes for the dog to get at the chocolate. You can't be too careful with toxic foods and pets.

In the winter the same car will act like a refrigerator. It holds the cold and gets colder. A pet left in that car will be in distress very quickly.
Metal gets cold and cars are essentially metal. Pets can go into distress and die from being in a cold car.

Many times the dog is not so lucky. The temperature in the car can climb to dangerous levels quite quickly. The dog is essentially cooked to death.
Every year there are warnings posted and dog deaths are reported in the news. Every year a new set of dogs is left behind in cars to die or almost die.
We all know what will happen if you leave your dog. What will it take for this to stop happening.

A couple out walking their Jack Russel found out the hard way that it is tick season. After their walk they found over a dozen ticks on their dog.
They found the ticks before they attached so they were easy to remove.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/kitchener...-1.7203865

They had forgotten about preventive tick treatments. It is fortunate that ticks are dark colored and the dog is white. They could see them right away.
It is recommended that you do a tick check after every walk in tick area. They are easy to remove when they have not attached to the dog.
It is also recommended that appropriate tick treatment be used as a precaution. If a tick has fully attached get help removing it and any treatment that is needed afterwards. Mostly ticks are not carrying diseases, but it is good to be sure.

Dogs will get into anything. Many kitchens have easily accessible compost bins. A woman can home to find her dogs had spread her compost all over the kitchen. One dog was very sick, twitching and spasming. A trip to the vet led to an ICU stay. They dog got to the vet on time and is going to recover.

Compost bins get moldy which is dangerous for dogs. They contain onion skins, potato peelings and apple cores.
There are things in our compost bins that we wouldn't feed to our dogs. We have to be careful that our dogs don't help themselves.
Bins could have some kind of lock or be kept in a closed cupboard. The bin could be on a counter that dogs can't reach. Probably the bin should be emptied more frequently. It is worth the trouble to keep our dog friends healthy.

Some decorations like tinsel are not worth the risk. Fragile ornaments are not worth it. When I had cats, I put plastic ornaments on the bottom of my tree so they could play with them. Anything that could be dangerous was at the top of the tree. That even worked when I had hamsters. They would get out and play with the ornaments at the bottom of the tree.
Even things like candy and chocolate need to be out of reach of our furry friends.

A number of dog food brands are being recalled in the USA because of a possible Salmonella contamination.
The article lists brands and lot numbers so it is best to check if you are not sure.

Salmonella can be quite serious. Humans and other animals can be infected so the food must be disposed of carefully.
It is not good that there are so many brands involved in the recall. I think they should be investigating the source of the Salmonella.
It is around, but it is not that common.
