A new vet hospital is opening in Toronto. It will be open 24/7, 365 days a year and you will be allowed to stay with your pet.
The thinking is that your pet needs a vet, when it needs a vet, not during limited clinic hours. When your pet is unwell or needs a procedure, the pet needs you there and you need to be there. Animals heal better under these conditions.

https://nowtoronto.com/news/new-toronto-...g-surgery/

This is the first of its kind of vet hospital in Toronto, but there are other locations.

https://www.veg.com/

I like the concept. A frightened pet needs its people right there with it. Our pets must feel abandoned when we hand them over to strangers.
We need to be there too.
When I think of the times I handed an animal over and just got a vague phone call later saying the pet died, I still feel unsure. I wasn't there so I will never really know what happened. How did the pet die? Why did the pet die? I still think my cat would have survived surgery if I had been there when she woke up.
She would have woken up in pain, without me present and it was too much for her.
If this hospital can prevent this from happening, then this is a very good thing.

The South Korean government is serious about ending bear bile farming in 2026. There will be jail sentences for those who break the law.
The real problem now will be the future of bears still on bear farms. There are some sanctuaries, but not enough for the number of bears.
This still needs to be sorted out.

It may take time to move all the bears, but at least the bile extraction has to stop.
Hopefully places will be found for the bears in various sanctuaries. They may have to be moved to other countries.
Maybe some zoos around the world could take some bears. Sadly they can't be returned to the wild to live natural lives. Local cat lovers are not happy with the move.

There are a lot of feral cats in Hawaii. They are descended from cats that were brought to the island in the 18th century.
They are very destructive of local wildlife.
Just feeding the cats is not a good idea. They will continue to multiply. They need to be trapped and neutered. Otherwise the problem will get worse each year.
Just banning the feeding could make things worse. Hungry cats will hunt local wildlife more frequently. People who openly feed cats could feed them in secret.
The whole situation will be out of control.
I don't know what the solution is, but there needs to be a balance in how things are done. A total feeding ban would lead to hungry cats hunting and killing wildlife.
It would make enemies of the local cat lovers. To solve the cat problem, it would be better to have the cat lovers working for a solution.
There are too many cats and they are feral so they cannot be adopted.

This is a familiar problem in many places in the world. Maybe we need a global conference to discuss and find a humane and effective way to deal with invasive feral cats. Surely if enough people come up with ideas, one of them should work.

Sadly the plan is to catch and kill the cats. There are groups fighting this solution. There are groups fighting for this solution.

I don't like the idea of 2 million cats being hunted and killed. There will be some cruelty taking place.
Is Trap Neuter Release a possibility? If it were to be done, it needs to be done on a massive scale. It would require help from other countries.
Otherwise the cats would multiply faster than they could be neutered.

The situation is desperate and I have no idea what could be done that is a humane suggestion.
It is our fault that the cats are there. We caused the problem. We need to find a human solution.

This birth brings hope for the species in Kenya. Every Rhino birth is a reason the celebrate. This particular herd had a calf born in 2023.
There might be another calf on he way soon. This herd is genetically different from the other black Rhinos, so it does offer hope for genetic diversity for the overall

Ontario's Endangered Species Act has been around since the 1970s. The Act has done much to protect species and their habitats.
Bill C5 will repeal that. The article is long and involved and I will let you read it for yourself.

https://thenarwhal.ca/ontario-endangered...-repealed/

The whole purpose is to put making money first and the environment last.
It totally goes back on things we fought for. The environment will be considered an inconvenience in the fight to make money.
I feel sick just thinking about it. I have already attended protest marches and there will be more.
We will need to fight each violation of the environment separately and as a collective protest.
We haven't even begun to make progress on climate change and yet we are going back to the time when the environment didn't matter.

Sadly the province has a majority government and the next election is years away. Will there be anything left to save when this nightmare is over.

I don't think anyone can really defend declawing anymore. It is known to be a cruel form of mutilation.
California is taking a major step forward by banning declawing. New York was the first state to ban declawing, in 2019.
Sadly the California Veterinary Association is against the ban.

https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2...awing-bill

I can't say I think too highly of the California Veterinary Association. Opposing a bill that bans declawing is almost like saying you are pro animal cruelty.
I have witnessed declawing surgery and it is brutal. When the cat woke up it screamed in pain.
So far only New York, Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, plus Washington D.C. have banned declawing.
That is barely 10%.
It is hard to believe that we still do such barbaric things to animals.

A local coast guard off of Somaliland intercepted a boat that had 11 Cheetah Cubs on board. The cats were stuffed in sacks like potatoes. Five people have been arrested and the cubs are now in the care of the Cheetah Conservation Fund. Somaliland is a breakaway region of Somalia and a serious hub for animal trafficking.
Most to the animals end up in the middle east. Another ten cubs were rescued in August.

https://abcnews.go.com/International/wir...-126157676

This was a real save. Cheetahs are not pets and they would have had miserable lives. They were already in terrible condition.
The Cheetah Conservation Fund is currently caring for 128 rescued Cheetahs. Sadly the illegal pet trade is driving the species to extinction.
Unless we stop the illegal animal trade things could end badly for the species.

Raw cat food and raw dog food have become a real trend. The idea might seem to be good, however raw meat can be dangerous.
It would be hard to prepare it and package it for sale without contaminating it. It would be safer to use cooked food. If you really want raw food, to be safe you would need to buy raw meat and prepare it yourself.
