He travels from town to town building Bee Hotels and educating people about bees. His interest grew when he realized how much bee populations had declined and how badly that was effecting everything. Gradually he is teaching people to make space in their lives for the bees.
His conservation hero and inspiration is our dear departed Steve Irwin. Steve is still with us in spirit, inspiring new generations to care about animals and ecology.
Saving the bees is critical. So much else depends on the bees. Teaching people to build Bee Hotels and welcome them in their gardens is going to make a big difference. It is a little thing everyone can do. If everyone welcomes the bees, the bees will be able to make a comeback.
It is good to know that there are people out there making a difference.

I would think that south of the equator it would need to be No Mow November.
Spring is a hard time for our early pollinators. We need them, but we often fail to provide for them.
Maybe we should be planting dandelions deliberately so they will be there for our pollinator friends.

I knew they were smart. I have watched them in my garden and I think they have watched me. I get along with my garden wasps. If they hang around when I am eating outside, I give them some of my food and they eat and leave me in peace. They do like the sweet stuff.
People who frantically try to chase wasps away are missing the point. Give them a treat and they will leave. Swatting at them has the opposite results.

The impact of Alberta wildfire smoke on the bees

Right now there are a number of wildfires out of control in Alberta. Much of the province is blanketed in smoke. This is hard on the people living there. It is even harder on the bees. They tend not to fly when there is smoke.
The bee keepers are worried about their honey production, but it is a much bigger problem than that. Wild pollinators are having trouble too. If the plants are not pollinated then the plants will not produce seeds and the fruits and vegetables that other animals need for food.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/...-1.6850687

This is a serious side effect of the wildfires. All life in the area will be impacted. Vast areas will be destroyed by the fires themselves. Equally large areas will suffer because of the smoke. The damage caused by climate change is going to be worse than we realize.

I found another article warning people in Alberta to stay indoors. It really is that bad.

https://globalnews.ca/news/9714590/alber...nt=rundown

What is the wildlife supposed to do. The honey bees can stay in their hives. Some burrowing animals can stay in their burrows. What are the birds and all the rest of the animals supposed to do?

Bumble Bees are starting to amaze researchers. Bees that were taught to solve puzzles taught the rest of their colony how to do it. If there were two ways to solve the puzzle, a colony would eventually show preference for one method other the other. It seems bumble bees have some form of culture in their colonies.

https://www.cbc.ca/radio/asithappens/bum...-1.6773641

They are definitely showing more intelligence than expected. Like many species, bees are a lot smarter than we thought.
This is going to take more study to really understand what is going on, but until then, don't underestimate our bee friends.

Play is something that we have observed in some animals like dogs and dolphins. As we expand our observations who know what we will find.
I know I am going to be watching my garden Bumble Bees a lot more closely from now on. Maybe they do things I never noticed.

Monarch butterflies have been struggling to survive for some time. Many people have been planting Milkweed for the caterpillars to feed on.
People are planting pollinator gardens. Some places have banned pesticides. Sadly the numbers have still declined. Too many places still use pesticides. Too many areas lack suitable food. They are definitely in danger of extinction.
Monarch have the longest migration pattern of any insect. Each migration takes multiple generations. Their loss would be the loss of something so unique and amazing.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/monarch-...-1.6527309

We need to work harder to save the Monarchs. Their life cycle covers many areas geographically. So many places would be impacted by their loss.
We can't let this happen. The Monarchs are an incredible bright spot in every habitat that they visit. I can't even picture a world without them.

A patch of land near Trudeau Airport has been allowed to grow wild since 2012. It has flourished. It is now home to many birds, insects and small mammals. In particular there is a lot of milkweed, the one plant that feeds Monarch caterpillars. Right now there would be Monarch eggs and caterpillars. There would be nesting ground birds. It wasn't just vacant land.
Sadly the company that owns the land sees it differently. They didn't designate it as a Monarch Butterfly site so in their minds it isn't a Monarch Butterfly site.

https://montreal.ctvnews.ca/montreal-con...-1.5972419

I could cry when I think of the number of animals that will have suffered because of this thoughtless action. It is thoughtless and it is ignorant.
They really didn't look at the land and what is happening there. In 12 years it has reverted to wild or rather it has become healthy, natural land again.
The company involved, like so many others has become blind to the natural world around them.

The loss of this one field is heartbreaking, but what it implies about the people who did it is scary. They are disconnected from the natural world around them.
They can't see the natural world around them, but they are the ones who are making decisions about how that land is used or abused.
We need to find a way to reconnect people with the Earth before they do worse things.
Right now the planet needs saving from climate change and all the many things we have done to it. It seems that first we need to convince people that the planet matters. People won't work to save what they don't care about.
