Strychnine is a neurotoxin. It is a nasty poison, that causes a horrible death in any animal exposed to it.
Alberta and Saskatchewan want to use it on gophers. It is a brutal way to kill a gopher. It also kills non target animals.
Once it is out there it kills anything. That means endangered species. That means household pets. It can also mean any human that encounters it.
They are determined to do it, even though there are other environmentally friendly ways of dealing with gophers.
I thought we had grown past the stage of deliberately poisoning our environment. Will we never learn.
It will take years to clean up after this mess.
Yes, I have seen an animal die of Strychnine poisoning. It was a pet cat and it was horrible.
Why would we even think about doing this?

Care for the dogs should have been his first priority.
Lying about it and tying to cover it up by cremating the dogs is just so wrong.
The fact that he would try to do that says a lot about him and it is not good.
I feel for the families. This is worse than just losing a pet.
They will always know their pets suffered and would have been so frightened and distressed.
Some of them will probably never have a pet again. The reminder would be too painful.

Sadly they have gone ahead with the hunt. It makes no sense. They have gone two years without a whale hunt.
They plan to ban the hunt starting this coming fall. Why would they kill whales now? There is little market for whale meat.
It is not profitable anymore. It is also not safe to eat the whale meat. Why do more whales have to die for nothing?
Why can't Iceland do the right thing and stop the hunt.

This is totally shocking. The shelter was not alerted. Someone just left the boxes outside the shelter. It is a good thing the staff noticed the boxes and rescued the cats in time. Each box contained multiple cats and kittens. There were 32 in total. One cat was dead and the rest need a lot of care. The shelter is putting out a plea for financial assistance. This is a lot of cats all at once.
You know they are going to do their best to look after all these cats. Somehow they will bring them to health and eventually find homes for them.
It is a big job and the staff at the shelter are amazing. They just jumped right in and did what needed doing.
The people who dumped the cats like that are something else. The cats must have been so afraid to be taped up in boxes. It could have ended badly for them. It did end badly for one cat. We can accept that they couldn't keep the cats any more. We can overlook the stupidity that let them end up with 32 cats in the first place.
This is a complicated situation. The spotted owls are native to the north west USA. The barred owls have been moving west and out competing them.
One proposed solution is to kill the barred owls.

https://www.latimes.com/environment/stor...lling-plan

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...otted-owls

The real problem for both species is habitat loss. If they were not facing habitat loss they would not be in competition.
So we have created the problem by destroying habitats. Now we think we can fix it by killing thousands of owls.
The whole situation is not being well thought out.
I am not sure anything can stop the cull, but it can't be the right thing to do. It won't fix the loss of habitat for either species.
Why are the barred owls moving further west in the first place?
That should be the first question that is answered before anything else is considered.
What would killing that many owls do to the environment?
This could end up being a very big ecological disaster.

This is a complicated situation. The spotted owls are native to the north west USA. The barred owls have been moving west and out competing them.
One proposed solution is to kill the barred owls.

The real problem for both species is habitat loss. If they were not facing habitat loss they would not be in competition.

Marineland is closed and can no longer use the whales in shows. They have thirty Beluga Whales left. Since 2019, 19 Beluga Whales and one Orca have died.
They tried to sell the remaining whales to a theme park in China where they would be kept in captivity and forced to do shows for the public.
The Canadian Government blocked that. Now they want the government to pay for the upkeep of the whales or else they will euthanize them all.
It is unclear what is going to happen. The Provincial Government has the power to seize them and protect them and take the costs out of the value of the Marineland property. It is worth millions. Threatening to kill the whales if they can't sell them to a theme park is terrible. I hope the province does step in and quickly. The whales belong in a sea sanctuary. I don't know if there is one available. If not, they need to build one. Marineland made a lot of money from these whales. They owe them a good life.

A young woman did a series of videos for YouTube and Facebook where she tortured various animals to death.
She was charged and could have received some serious jail time. She certainly deserved it.
The judge gave her probation. She got no jail time or fines. She won't even serve the five years of probation because of credit for pretrial time served.
She is not allowed to own animals. Not legally, but do you think that will stop her.

The judge has totally failed to bring justice to the animals that suffered. She has also failed to protect society. She has turned an animal abuser loose and who knows what will happen. The woman probably is a danger to animals and to humans.
How did she get away with such videos on Facebook or YouTube. I thought they were better monitored than that.
We need to do a better job of reporting such things. No animal should suffer like these animals did. I think they need to look into who watches such videos.
I think they are a danger to us all, as well as the abuser.

Killing primates like that is unacceptable. Just feeding them off afterwards is callous behavior.

A zoo in Denmark takes callousness to a whole new level. They are asking people to bring in small animal pets so they can feed them to their carnivores.
This lets people get rid of unwanted pets by letting a zoo kill them and feed them to their animals.
This allows people to have pets for a while and then the zoo will take them. It is letting people think of their pets as disposable.
You can enjoy a young cute animal and then you can get rid of it. The zoo can produce cute babies to show the public then they can kill them and feed them to other animals.
It is callous and irresponsible. I think it is disgusting.

Protesters chained themselves to the Baboon cages because the zoo plans to kill healthy baboons.
They claim that there is an overcrowding problem. Up until now killing healthy primates has not been allowed. This crosses a line that allows for a lot of other abuses.
The zoo should not have let the baboons breed if they did not have room for them. It was their responsibility to know how many animals they could provide for.

Letting them kill healthy animals is unacceptable. In particular letting them kill healthy primates is totally wrong. We can never find that an acceptable action.
Whatever they do they need to find or provide suitable accommodation for the baboons. I am glad the protestors have brought this to our attention.

A dog trainer in California faces charges in a case of animal abuse and animal deaths of 11 dogs.
The two quickly took the dogs to different crematoriums and some were actually cremated.
The rest of the bodies have been recovered. One dog died of blunt force trauma and two died of heat stoke.
The other bodies still have to be examined.
It is possible that there are other dogs involved.
This is shocking. The trainer had a good reputation and he wasn't cheap.
People trusted him. It was suspicious that he cremated dogs before he told the owners they were dead.
It is also suspicious that he took dogs to different crematoriums. That really is a sign that he is covering something up.
Blunt force trauma, he probably hit the dog with something. Heat stroke, dogs were probably left in a hot car.

I am glad he is being charged. It doesn't make it easier for the people who lost dogs, but at least they know that no other dogs will be hurt.
