Now there is the complication of the failing sea ice. The seal population is in trouble.
I can't imagine how anyone can kill a baby seal like that. They are totally helpless. There really isn't even a market for their fur anymore.
Many places have banned the products.
Who can look at those eyes and not be moved.
This is one of those industries, like the dog meat farming, that once it is started they can't seem to end it.
I don't know what it will take to stop this slaughter. The sheer brutality tells us it is wrong.
Surely we want a different future for the people of Atlantic Canada. No one could want their children to grow up to this life.

This is totally shocking. The shelter was not alerted. Someone just left the boxes outside the shelter. It is a good thing the staff noticed the boxes and rescued the cats in time. Each box contained multiple cats and kittens. There were 32 in total. One cat was dead and the rest need a lot of care. The shelter is putting out a plea for financial assistance. This is a lot of cats all at once.

https://www.castanet.net/news/BC/590147/...d-up-boxes

You know they are going to do their best to look after all these cats. Somehow they will bring them to health and eventually find homes for them.
It is a big job and the staff at the shelter are amazing. They just jumped right in and did what needed doing.
The people who dumped the cats like that are something else. The cats must have been so afraid to be taped up in boxes. It could have ended badly for them. It did end badly for one cat. We can accept that they couldn't keep the cats any more. We can overlook the stupidity that let them end up with 32 cats in the first place. However, there is no excuse for dumping the cats the way they did, not just the dumping, but the way in which it was done.
I hope they find who did it and charge them for something.

One proposed solution is to kill the barred owls.
The real problem for both species is habitat loss. If they were not facing habitat loss they would not be in competition.
So we have created the problem by destroying habitats. Now we think we can fix it by killing thousands of owls.
The whole situation is not being well thought out.
I am not sure anything can stop the cull, but it can't be the right thing to do. It won't fix the loss of habitat for either species.
Why are the barred owls moving further west in the first place?
That should be the first question that is answered before anything else is considered.
What would killing that many owls do to the environment?
This could end up being a very big ecological disaster.

They tried to sell the remaining whales to a theme park in China where they would be kept in captivity and forced to do shows for the public.
The Canadian Government blocked that. Now they want the government to pay for the upkeep of the whales or else they will euthanize them all.
It is unclear what is going to happen. The Provincial Government has the power to seize them and protect them and take the costs out of the value of the Marineland property. It is worth millions. Threatening to kill the whales if they can't sell them to a theme park is terrible. I hope the province does step in and quickly. The whales belong in a sea sanctuary. I don't know if there is one available. If not, they need to build one. Marineland made a lot of money from these whales. They owe them a good life.
The judge has totally failed to bring justice to the animals that suffered. She has also failed to protect society. She has turned an animal abuser loose and who knows what will happen. The woman probably is a danger to animals and to humans.
People are very upset and Animal Rights groups are protesting.
Killing primates like that is unacceptable. Just feeding them off afterwards is callous behavior.

A zoo in Denmark takes callousness to a whole new level. They are asking people to bring in small animal pets so they can feed them to their carnivores.

This lets people get rid of unwanted pets by letting a zoo kill them and feed them to their animals.
This allows people to have pets for a while and then the zoo will take them. It is letting people think of their pets as disposable.
You can enjoy a young cute animal and then you can get rid of it. The zoo can produce cute babies to show the public then they can kill them and feed them to other animals.
It is callous and irresponsible. I think it is disgusting.

They claim that there is an overcrowding problem. Up until now killing healthy primates has not been allowed. This crosses a line that allows for a lot of other abuses.
The zoo should not have let the baboons breed if they did not have room for them. It was their responsibility to know how many animals they could provide for.

Letting them kill healthy animals is unacceptable. In particular letting them kill healthy primates is totally wrong. We can never find that an acceptable action.
Whatever they do they need to find or provide suitable accommodation for the baboons. I am glad the protestors have brought this to our attention.

A dog trainer in California faces charges in a case of animal abuse and animal deaths of 11 dogs.
The two quickly took the dogs to different crematoriums and some were actually cremated.
The rest of the bodies have been recovered. One dog died of blunt force trauma and two died of heat stoke.
The other bodies still have to be examined.
It is possible that there are other dogs involved.

This is shocking. The trainer had a good reputation and he wasn't cheap.
People trusted him. It was suspicious that he cremated dogs before he told the owners they were dead.
It is also suspicious that he took dogs to different crematoriums. That really is a sign that he is covering something up.
Blunt force trauma, he probably hit the dog with something. Heat stroke, dogs were probably left in a hot car.

I am glad he is being charged. It doesn't make it easier for the people who lost dogs, but at least they know that no other dogs will be hurt.

A United States Postal Service truck containing 12,000 chicks was left at a postal service distribution center for days. By the time they were discovered, thousands had died. The hatchery can't take them back. They ended up at a Delaware animal shelter. The shelter is not equipped for anything like this, but they are doing the best they can. They are offering the chicks for adoption, but only a few hundred have been taken. That leaves the shelter caring for thousands of baby birds.

https://www.cnn.com/2025/05/20/us/delawa...usps-truck

It is impressive that the animal shelter is somehow looking after all these chicks.
Hopefully other shelters or farm sanctuaries can take some of the birds.

The real issue is the shipping of live animals. There needs to be a lot more oversight and accountability. Did the driver know he was transporting live animals?
He must have known. How and why could he park a truck of live animals and just leave them. If he couldn't deliver the shipment, shouldn't he have had to report this to a supervisor. Did the people waiting for the shipment not ask where the chicks were.
It doesn't seem like anyone took responsibility for 12,000 live baby animals.
This should never be allowed to happen again. There need to be more rules around the shipping of live animals. They are not just packages that yo can deliver tomorrow. By tomorrow they could be dead. In this case, thousands were dead.
