It was a hamster! Somehow she got the hamster into a box and brought it home.
A year later she can't imagine life without a hamster.
Some have given birth since then, so there are more. The shelter is struggling to sort them out and keep them fed and watered.
They really need help. They need to get as many as possible into foster homes. It helps that other shelters are taking some of the mice.
There are so many that they could multiply faster than the shelter can process them. It is ambitious of them to even try to sort this out.
This is one reason why small rodents are not the best pets. They have so many mice to deal with that they will not be able to sort males
from females before there are more mice pregnant again. I wish them luck and I hope a lot of other shelters can take a number of mice.
They are going to need the help.

It looks like he has a fallen branch that he is dragging along. We get a lot of branches coming down in wind storms. Maybe if we had more beavers, they could clear the streets after big storms. The city crews work as fast as they can, but I bet a team of beavers could do it faster.

Researchers from the University of Melbourne figured out how to photograph it. They are night time pictures, but you can see how big it is.
Of course it is danger of extinction because of human activity.

An unfortunate flying squirrel got himself covered in spray foam. He must have been in a wall when the foam was used. It had hardened and left him in a very bad way. The Cape Wildlife Center took him in and got to work. They had to anesthetize him, but they got all the foam off. Sadly he lost a lot of fur, but it will grow back. The Center will care for him until he is okay.
Squirrels get themselves into the oddest places. Good thing somebody saw him. Without help he would not have survived.
He looks kind of sad without fur on his face, but I bet he will do well once it grows back.

That leads to the question of what other animals respond to music.
Certainly, birds respond to music. We may not be as exclusive in our musical abilities as we think we are.
We might be the only species that writes our music down, but only a small percentage of humans can do that.

Thinking of rats and music, what about the pied piper story?
Was there some truth to the legend? There is often a grain of truth in an old legend.
Maybe rats left because they didn't like the music. Is that the new secret of rat control?
We could use it in Toronto, especially in the subway tunnels.

A woman driving along an Alberta highway was surprised to see something bright white. When she stopped to check, it was an albino porcupine. This is a very rare sight. The little guy seems to be fine, going about life as usual. This was her first porcupine sighting, and it was a special one.
I have seen porcupines, but I have never seen an albino one.
I am still looking for the white squirrel of Toronto. White rodents elude me.

No, you didn't misread the tittle. She really is travelling to Hawaii to scatter her hamster's ashes.
During the pandemic lockdowns she realized that her hamster, Spud, is always in lockdown. So, she started making sets for him to play in. She did mini art galleries and scenes from cities. His favourite was the Hawaiian beach scene. Now that he is gone, she is going to take him to his favourite place.

It is a little odd and yet it is kind of sweet. She did so much for Spud while he was alive. Now she is going to complete things by giving him one last adventure.
The trip will do her good too and it will help with the loss. I wish more people would take their hamsters as seriously as she took Spud. She cared how he felt.
I hope it is a good trip for her.
