Orangutan observed treating wound with medicinal plant
#1
A male Sumatran Orangutan was observed treating a wound n his face with a medicinal plant. He chewed the leaves and applied the juice to the wound. Then he covered the wound with fresh leaves. They were very specific leaves used by humans to treat illnesses.
This is the first time that an orangutan has been observed doing this.

It is the first time an orangutan has been observed doing something like this, but it doesn't mean it is the first time an orangutan has done this.
There are probably many things we haven't observed. It does call into question where we learned to use medicinal plants. Did we figure it out ourselves or did we see someone like an orangutan using plants. There is a lot we don't know about our orangutan cousins.
