A 40 pound cat was surrendered to an animal shelter in Virginia, because the owner can no longer care for him.
The six year old cat is in good health in spite of his weight. He was too big to fit in a shelter cage and had to be kept in a staff office. He is three times the weight of a normal cat.
When he was put up for adoption, he was claimed by someone who wants to help him lose weight. He is doing very well and is actually down to 38 pounds .

It might not seem like much of an improvement, but even a little weight loss will help. The more he loses weight, the more active he can be. His whole system will improve. I can't imagine how anyone let him get to that weight. When he hit 20 pounds he must have looked overweight. He more than doubled that.
Good for his new person that she is dedicated to getting him to a healthy weight. He is going to be a beautiful boy when he is a normal weight. He will be able to play again. The extra weight must be putting stress on his joints. He will feel so much better when he is thinner. Good luck Patches. We are all rooting for you.
I've seen videos when this happens they have to do it slowly or else it's dangerous healthwise.
I have heard that about the dangers of weight loss in cats. It effects the liver, I think.
Hopefully they are working with a vet and being very careful. Patches can't stay the way he is, that would be dangerous too.
