Fishing areas closed because of entangled Right Whale
#1
A young adult Right Whale was spotted with entanglement last December and again this spring. Fishing is being closed in that area. Attempts will be made to remove the entanglements.

The whale is entangled in our discarded fishing gear so  our response is the least we can do. For years we just dumped stuff in the ocean. It was cheaper to replace gear than to try and retrieve it. If Right Whales are going to survive we have to change how we do things. Rescuing entangled whales is a start. Using whale safe gear is an improvement. No longer abandoning gear is essential. Finding a way to collect already abandoned gear is something we need to do.
We also need to clean up the garbage we have dumped in the oceans and stop treating the oceans as a giant garbage can. That should keep us busy for quite a few years.

They are still trying to rescue the entangled whale. It is a complicated procedure. They have to find him and there needs to be a rescue team nearby.
They are working on it.

Hopefully they can get to the whale and free him before he becomes too weak and dies of his entanglement.
Think of what this must be like for the whale. He doesn't know why he is tangled in fishing gear that is not a part of his natural habitat.
It must be frightening and probably very uncomfortable. Best of luck to the rescuers.
