Polar Bear adopts a cub
#1
The Polar Bears around Churchill are well studied. A particular female was spotted in March with one cub. Both mother and cub have GPS tracking systems, They were seen again in November and there were two cubs. The second cub has no GPS and is not her cub. Mom adopted the second cub. This is a rare occurrence.
Mom is 5 years and the cubs are about 11 months. Cubs usually stay with their mothers for 2 1/2 years and have a survival rate of 50%. On its own the second cub had little chance of survival. Now, with a good mom, the cub has at least a 50% chance of making it.

Polar Bears are amazing. They are feeling the pressure of climate change and life is harder for them. That didn't stop a female from picking up a lone cub and giving it a chance of survival. If they are willing to help each other, their chances of survival as a speciesĀ  is much better. I hope this mom can beat the odds and raise both cubs successfully.
