Lucy the elephant should stay where she is.
#1
Lucy the elephant lives at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. She is 50 years old and has been there since 1977.
There has been contention over her being there for a long time now. Most captive elephants are being transferred to elephant sanctuaries.
The zoo has had Lucy assessed by experts regularly. She is getting good care. Yes she is alone and no Edmonton Valley Zoo is  not a fancy place.
The recommendation is that she remain where she is. At her age a journey anywhere could kill her. So Lucy is staying in Edmonton.

There are reasons why staying in Edmonton is not ideal for Lucy, but moving her could be fatal. She is being well looked after and she has called the Edmonton Valley Zoo her home for 49 years. Sometimes you have to balance realities. She is comfortable and at home where she is. Having other elephants around would be good for Lucy,  but she is unlikely to live and get to meet them. Letting her live out her life in peace where she is, is the better option.
Many elephants should be transferred to sanctuaries and I hope they are. For Lucy, the best choice is to let her live out her life where everything is familiar and she is getting the best care possible.
