Extinct tortoise found alive
#1
A rare form of Galapagos tortoise was found in 2019. Genetic testing has confirmed that she is Chelonoidis Phantasticus. This is the same species as a male that was collected and died later in California. His specimen is preserved. It has been a hundred years since the species was seen.
Fernanda now lives at the  Galapagos National Park's  Giant Tortoise Breeding center. They are searching the island for a male of her species.

Some of these rare species in remote areas could still be alive. We should be more careful about declaring things extinct.
Fernanda needs a male if the species is going to survive. We have been collecting specimens from places and we may be the reason why these species are lost.
Collecting that one male all those years ago might have been the difference between species survival and species decline.
Moving Fernanda might help the species, but it also might be the end of it. We don't know yet.
