Wildebeest, a vital species

Wildebeest are one of Africa's most important species. They are constantly on the move They form huge herds and consume massive amounts of vegetation.
Because of their sheer numbers and the amount they eat they control the vegetation and keep it short. This serves to prevent wildfires.  
Their hooves aerate the soil and their dung fertilizes it. 
When their numbers were low the ecosystem suffered and there were wildfires. Restoring their numbers have restored an ecological balance.
There were as few as 200,000 wildebeest in the 1950s and now there are 1.5 million.

The health of the African Savannah is linked to the herds of wildebeest that constantly roam the area.
The prevention of wildfires alone makes them essential to the area. 

There are a lot of problems with wildfires around the world right now. 
The real cause is ecological imbalances. We need to determine what species are missing or have reduced numbers. 
Restoring wildebeest numbers have helped Africa. What do we need to restore elsewhere to restore balance and reduce fires.
Many place are already working on that. It will take time, but it can be done.
