Iceland grants license to hunt 128 Fin Whales
#1
It had been hoped that Iceland would finally stop whaling. There is only one whaling company left in the country. Whale watching tourism has become a strong part of the countries economy. In a surprise move, Iceland has granted Hvalur a license to kill 128 Fin Whales. This is in spite of the fact that it has been determined that the killing is an act of animal cruelty. They use explosive harpoons and it takes hours of intense suffering before the whale dies.
The Fin Whale is an endangered animal. There is a very limited market for whale meat. Over 50% of Icelanders oppose the hunt.

The big question in my mind is WHY? Why would they do this when there is every reason not to do it. The people don't want it. It is not economically profitable. It is known to be an act of animal cruelty. The whales being hunted are endangered and they need our help to survive.
So WHY?
There is not one good reason for doing this.
Maybe the tourists should boycott Iceland until they end the whaling. If you want to see whales, visit Newfoundland.
