The Indian government has ordered New Delhi to remove all its stray dogs from the streets. It is estimated that there are 800,000 to one million stray dogs on the streets of New Delhi. The dogs are supposed to be placed in permanent shelters.

There are no permanent shelters built at this time. Even if they got built, there are no plans or funds set up to feed and care for a million dogs in these not yet built shelters. The removal order is a response to an increase in dog bites. The reason for wanting to act is good, but the proposed action is going to go badly. How do you capture a million strays and care for them. Massive vaccine programs would help with the rabies issue. Some form of spay neuter program would help bring the numbers under control. They have been ordered to pick up 5000 dogs right way, but there is no infrastructure set up to handle even 5000 dogs.
Protests are under way to try and reverse the decision.
Something needs to be done about the stray dogs and the number of biting incidents, but the reaction needs to be better thought out and more realistic.
What needs to be done. What can be done. How can it be done. A more thought out approach could actually have good results.
