The golden retriever somehow opened the cage, got the chicken out and ran away with it. People were so astonished that they just stood and watched.

I guess he didn't feel it was right to see a chicken in a cage like that. Chances are the chicken was being sold as food, so he saved her life.
Golden retrievers always do the kind thing. We need more dogs like this.
