Studies are showing that our relationships with our dogs rate higher than human friendships.
People were asked to rate relationships with different people in our lives under different circumstances.
Dogs rated higher.

Dogs meet our social needs.
They are like our children, but with less conflicts. 
Dogs really are our best friends.

You don't even have to know the dog for it to make you feel better.
I ride home on a subway car full of tired unsmiling people. Someone with a dog gets on and suddenly people look more alert and start smiling.
They even start talking to each other. All this just because a dog got on the train.

This backs up what I am saying.
