Well, there was one possible solution, according to the article - but it was rejected by the staff:
"The goldfish won't get a second life as pets; though ABC Denver reports that people have been phoning parks officials asking if they can head to the lake to retrieve some to take home, officials have said no."
That would have been a simple solution: come and take a goldfish home (with a net, not a fishing line, of course, LOL!). Better that than killing them all.
I assume that the problem arose because people got fed up looking after their goldfish so dumped them in the lake. Once again, it shows how some people (sadly) take on pets without researching the responsibilities first. As Knight always says, a pet is for life.
