I prefer the Trap-Neuter-Release method. It stops feral cat colonies from getting bigger, but it gives them a chance to live out their lives. 
Any solution that involves killing is not the right solution.
Killing strays doesn't seem to work anyhow. They just keep multiplying and filling the area with more and more cats. Preventing them from having more kittens and feeding them where they live keeps the numbers the stable and then they slowly decrease in numbers as older cats die. It is a humane solution and it works.

I would be upset to read about a number of cats being killed like that.
