Pigs bound for slaughter in a truck rollover
#6
Quote:I would think that the chances of getting a five-foot (152cm) memorial erected by the authorities on the spot are virutally nil, as the ground does not belong to PETA - but it is a great publicity idea! The press have reported about the request, and will do so again when the authorities discuss it. That keeps this terrible event in the public eye. So will the prosecution of the driver. The actual trial will be publicised and that will give PETA another chance to keep the public aware of what goes on in slaughter houses (and before the actual slaughter).
It  is all about the publicity. The more the public knows about slaughterhouses the better. Even talking about wanting to put up a memorial makes a statement.

There is a bit of an uncomfortable feeling about "rescuing" the pigs from the accident and then walking them into the slaughterhouse and "processing" them. It just feels wrong somehow.

Even if the driver is only charged with dangerous driving and the loss of animal life is not mentioned, the protesters will keep the issue alive. This slaughterhouse is known for pigs dying in transit. That is why Anita K  was out there protesting in the first place and it is why she was giving water to the pigs. Clearly the pigs suffer before they die. They endure terrible heat and thirst in summer and bitter cold in winter. It is cracking the image of happy animals living carefree lives until we eat them. Publicity about what they do is one thing this slaughterhouse does not want. They should have let Anita K give the water to the pigs. It would have been an unknown incident. Calling the police has made it a public issue. Now this accident has makes things even more public.
Maybe they can put up temporary memorials and keep replacing them every time they get torn down.
