I felt the same way. We know now that our ancient ancestors were very much like us. They loved their animals and cared for them and honoured them in death. Our relationship to animals goes back a very long way.

Some of the abuses and misuses of animals are perhaps a more modern thing. If we want to connect with real traditions that go way back in time we need to treat out animal friends with respect.
