They really are considering doing this. The government of Botswana has stated that the hunting ban was not permanent.
If they lift the hunting ban then more will follow. Culls and being used as pet food could well be the fate of the elephants of Botswana.

The only thing that might stop this is a strong public outcry against it. Elephants have struggled to rebuild their numbers. It would be sad to throw it away. If there are human/elephant conflicts then they need to find a slolution that doesn't involve killing the elephants.
