Greyhounds used in canine blood bank facilities
#1
California has two canine blood bank facilities. Hemopet and Animal Blood Bank Resources International are registered charities and are protected by California law. They house many retired greyhounds and in theory they are an adoption agency. What they really do is keep the dogs in cramped, uncomfortable conditions and draw their blood regularly. The blood is then sold to veterinarians. In California veterinarians are forced to buy the  blood they provide. They are not allowed to use voluntary donations from healthy pets.
Many of the greyhounds don't look well and some probably need blood transfusions themselves. Even if they are adopted they are still held for a bit longer so they can give more blood.

Greyhounds have it rough. They are born into the racing industry that uses and abuses them from birth.
Sadly many are killed. Then those that live long enough to retire can end up in cages in blood bank facilities.
They are such gentle dogs. It is horrible to think how many greyhounds spend their whole lives being used by humans. They are never given any love or care. They never know what it is to just have fun and be a dog.

It is unacceptable that these dogs are treated this way. These dogs are available because of the racing industry and this is just one more reason why that whole industry needs to be shut down.
