Regarding the Nerf Dog VP6903 Air Strike Thrower-Large-25 (mentioned in one of your links), my older son has had one for years for his labradors. He can "sling" balls a long way and doesn't even have to bend over to pick one up! They are very energetic and love running off a long way to retrieve balls.
