There was a serious heat wave in Alaska from 2014-2016. The Common Murres had a massive die off.
Four million birds died in the marine heat wave. It was the largest and longest recorded marine heat wave.
Scientists had been tracking their population and have continued to monitor it.
The heat wave has passed, but the common murre population has not rebounded. The numbers are still low.

This is bad. The birds are still effected by the heat wave of ten years ago.
Why haven't their numbers come back?
What would happen to them if there is another heat wave?
Common Murres are important to the ecosystem.
What will it take for them to recover. What if they don't.
