A million Goldfish in a pond
#1
In a stormwater pond near Ottawa they estimate that there are thousands, even a million  Goldfish in the pond. Goldfish are not native to North America and have no natural predators. They also produce a lot of eggs. The release of a few pet Goldfish can overrun a pond in a short time. The goldfish destroy the habitat and wipe out any native fish in the area.

They will probably end up euthanizing the Goldfish.
That is very sad. The Goldfish didn't ask to be there. They were bred to be pets. They survive as best they can. Many die because Canadian winters are too much for them.
The real problem is not the Goldfish, it is the irresponsible people who release them. They leave other people to lean up the mess they created.
Animal shelters will take fish. Turn them in at a shelter so they have a chance at life instead of setting them up to destroy our ponds and lakes.

As you say, it is left for others to clear up the actions of humans who have abandoned their goldfish.

Maybe we need to have actual Goldfish rescue groups that advertise that they will take unwanted Goldfish.
All you would need is one big tank and you could take in a lot of fish.
I don't think anyone had any idea of how fast Goldfish could multiply. If they are in a pond or lake, they can produce large numbers of eggs and
those eggs can hatch and survive.

It is sad that they will probably euthanize the Goldfish in the storm pond. I don't  know what the alternatives are.
