New lives for northern dogs
#1
Dogs and cats in remote northern communities have little chance of adoption. There are already too many so an extra litter of puppies is a problem.  Edmonton Humane Society and Parkland Pet Food Bank are working together to bring the animals south where they can find homes.

It is a good solution to the over population of animals in the remote northern communities. Edmonton Humane Society is remarkable for all the work it did for the Fort McMurray fire evacuees.

If we work at it and work together like these two groups, there are solutions to pet over population problems. I hope they can continue to reach the remote areas and bring out the extra pets that can't find homes. They deserve a chance at life too.

It's good to see this teamwork to give the dogs and cats a better chance.

There are still many people who are unsure about spay/neuter....or who live in situations where such routine surgeries are unaffordable because there are no cheap clinics etc. Or in places where it is a very unusual thing to do.

It seems that routine spay and neuter is a fairly recent idea. Nowadays it is the norm. But even in the 90s many people did not spay or neuter their dogs as routine.

Overpopulation, mostly with animals who are free to roam, or whose humans don't keep a careful watch on them, is just going to happen.

But some of those dogs/cats may belong to people in the north...(?) Or are they all strays?

There are no vets in the remote northern communities. There is no way to get a dog  neutered even if you wanted too.  That means there are litters of puppies that end up as strays. Giving these dogs a chance at life is a good thing. Helping the people to reduce the dog population is an important contribution. It is hard to picture how remote these places are. Dog food is hard to get so it is hard to feed extra dogs.

This is a contribution  that the communities really need.
