The New York Blood Center abandons research chimps
#1
The New York Blood Center used chimps as research animals in the 1970s.  They were used for blood transfusion research and hepatitis vaccine work among other things. They were used in a facility in Liberia ans when they finished with them they were placed on uninhabited mangrove islands. They did feed them at first, but in 2015 they stopped. These islands are not suitable for chimps and a coalition of charities headed by the Humane Society of the United States has taken over providing for them.

They are trying to put pressure on the New York Blood Center to honor their obligations towards the chimps. What is needed is a proper chimp center where they can receive medical care and better food. The New York Blood Center profited from using the chimps. Now they have an obligation to care for them.

This is a really big issue. What happens to primates that were used in medical research. Many of them were bred in captivity to be used in labs. A return to the wild is not an option. We have an obligation to care for them. Not just the companies that used them, although they definitely have an obligation. We as humans have an obligation towards another species that we have used so badly for our benefit.
It is good that we have stopped using primates for the most part. It will be better when we stop using them altogether. That is just the beginning. We have to care for the animals we have used and for their offspring. We might want to think about the other kinds of animals we use in labs. We as a species have some really big ethical obligations that we are not yet fulfilling.

Caring for these chimps is a good start.

It sounds like they are trying to care for the chimps. However it would be good if the company that used the chimps put more into their care.

We really need to fulfill our obligations towards retired research animals.

Can you find the link for the video? I would like to see it.
