Stray dog slaughter in India
#1
I understand that India has a serious stray dog problem. They do need to do something about it. Sterilizing the dogs so they stop producing so many puppies would really help. It is not being done. Instead people are brutally killing the dogs in terrible and inhumane ways.

There are petitions against this.

There are groups willing to pay people to kill the dogs.

It is a situation that is out of control and the government is not making good decisions and people are reacting.
It is alarming that their reaction is so violent and cruel. That level of public cruelty can't be good for any country. A whole generation of children will have grown up watching public animal cruelty.

One thing I noticed is the food source for these dogs. They are able to feed on garbage from city dumps. That makes it possible for the dogs to produce many puppies. Better garbage control would help.

They also need a massive rabies vaccination program. If you don't vaccinate the dogs then you should vaccinate the children.

Massive culls like this never work to reduce the number of strays. There always seem to be more. Working with the dogs they have, they could give them better care and stop the slaughter. It would be better than this brutal attack on dogs we are seeing now.

I have read in the press that the Indian economy is expanding (especially GDP), so some of that money could go into protecting its own people....by reducing the number of stray dogs via a massively expanded sterilisation and vaccination campaign. That would be a far more effective, and of course much more humane, way of reducing the stray dog population. Localised cruel culling by untrained people will never work.

Thank you for the petition link Catherine. I signed.

There IS a better way than this. I wonder if Animal Aid India can help at all during this massacre? I very much admire their work.

Animal Aid India is doing wonderful work. I am sure they are helping in the places where they have a presence. India is such a large country. There need to be a number of aid groups working. There need to be actual government programs to educate people and sterilize dogs.  They also need to have some serious vaccination programs. It would help to stop the spread of canine distemper. There should be no more rabies deaths. A massive vaccination program is the only way to combat it.

Killing dogs isn't even a band-aid solution. It is no solution at all.

It teaches people to be cruel and that could have serious consequences later.
