I think they try to compare specific genetic markers of different reptile families but this doesn't always provide clear answers for various reasons. It's still not certain if Monitors are truly the closest relatives to snakes or not, but seems to be the prevailing theory, but will be exciting to know what future studies reveal about their evolutionary story. They certainly are an elusive group of animals, they're so interesting
