Vet charges 106 pounds to confirm cat is dead
#1
A family's cat was hit by a car and was killed. The family just wanted to be sure so they rushed the cat to a vet. The vet looked at the cat, said it was dead and charged them 106 pounds, for two minutes work!

I just think this is outrageous. I know vets deserve to be paid, but this is ridiculous amount of money. The vet didn't do anything for the people or their cat. Surely there must be some way to regulate vet fees. In this case the vet should have shown some compassion and decency and just charged a minimum service charge. Over 200 dollars is not a minimum service charge.

I was just about to write, "This could only happen in America..." - but this happened in the UK! What a rip-off, for two minutes of work and no treatment! Vets' fees should be subject to some sort of appeal/arbitration in the case of excessive fees like these.

This time the vet was way out of line. I can understand that they have to charge a service fee, but not that much. A really nice vet would have said how sorry he was for their loss and charged them nothing.

Is there no way to regulate vets fees? Can they really charge anything they want?

This doesn't answer your question, Catherine, but this an eye-opener. I hadn't seen it before:

Very heartless, I think.

This is sad for the people especially at a time like that. You would think that vet could have shown a little mercy and not just gone by the rule book in that circumstance.

Vets here have an out-of-hours fee, which used to be £100 or £95 or something discounting any other work or treatment. That fee operated during any out of hours service including weekends. Anyone working at a practice would have to charge that fee if that was the policy there.

Once Misty had a funny turn and I rushed her to the vet on a Saturday. Well that cost £100 even before the vet looked at her or checked her over.
As soon as she got there she perked up. It ended with the vet giving her a dog biscuit which she ate happily.
I sad to her (and to the vet!) "That is the most expensive dog biscuit I have ever bought you Misty. Eat it a bit more slowly!"

This is where they have us. They charge a fortune outside of a very small window of time.

I know exactly what that article means. Vets recommend many things that are not in the animals best interest.
It is bad when the animal is a reptile. They charge huge amounts to do the wrong things when all the animal needs is a good soak.

I encountered something that made me angry. There is a specialist cat vet. My friend's old cat was dying and needed to be put down. We didn't want him to suffer. It was expensive, but for a fee the vet would take the cat into a back room and kill it for you.
If you paid much more money, you could be present when the cat died. My friend just couldn't afford the extra fee so her cat was deprived of her company when he died. That is very wrong! Very mercenary and greedy.

I agree with the article about the health of guinea pigs. Let them go. It is cruel to try and keep a guinea pig going. They have short lives and no guinea pig should be forced to live a life that is a burden.

I can see no justification for charging extra just for the human caretaker to watch. That is immoral.

I am shocked and horrified at this! The vet is using emotional tactics to get more mpney out of people! At a time like that, it is nothing less than cruel and greedy. It has shocked me so much to know anyone could do that, who is supposed to be a helper and healer of animals!
I would never use a vet whom I had heard had done that to anyone.

Here, there is no such thing. There would be a "call out" fee if the euthanasia was preferred at home. That would be the same as the out-of-hours fee (I think) There is always a call out fee when a vet attends a patient at home.

But the actual cost of euthanasia is not expensive here.
And there are no conditions (such as insisting on taking the animal to a back room.) The only time that might happen and the human family member was unable to be with the animal when it passed, would be in an emergency situation, when they take them through to the back to try to save their lives. Then yes, sadly that can happen.

It still makes me angry to think about it. The vet had two prices. If you wanted to hold and comfort your pet she charged much more.
I have always held my pets as they die. I have even done it for other people's pets. To take the cat away to die with strangers is cruel. I will never recommend that vet. In fact I tell people not to go to her. So her money grabbing ways will not profit her. I am sure I am not the only person to be unhappy about it.

They charge way to much to euthanize an animal. Some people would have no choice , but to let the animal suffer and die in its own time. They have lost sight of why they became vets. When did the dream of helping animals turn into a dream of making lots of money.
