Yangtze Turtle dies, leaving only 3 of the species left

A very rare Yangtze giant softshell turtle has died in a zoo in China. She was the only known female of the species and there are only 3 more left. One is at the same zoo. The other two are in Vietnam and their gender is unknown. This death could be the end for this species.

Turtles are endangered everywhere so there is always cause for concern. In this case the species will last as long as the three remaining turtles survive. Unless one of the turtles in Vietnam is female and has success at egg laying, we get to wait and watch while yet another species dies.

There have been too many who have died out. Maybe we need a national day of mourning for species that have been lost.
