Penguin chick safely hatched at Calgary Zoo
#1
A king Penguin egg cracked early putting the chick in danger. Quick thinking staff at Calgary Zoo used shell pieces left over from a Humboldt penguin egg from two years ago. They patched the egg and put it in the incubator. The little penguin chick successfully hatched on August 7.

I am impressed by the quick thinking staff who found a way to patch the egg. It would have been too soon and the little chick would not have survived.  I hope he has a long and happy life. He certainly has been lucky so far.

The little penguin chick is doing very well and his foster mom is really looking after him.

Since the new chick is an endangered species his birth is important. Seeing him thrive is a hopeful sign for his species.
His foster mom is a really special penguin. She is not even the same species as the chick she is raising. The actual parents of the chick are an older couple and they need the help  of a foster mom.

There is lots of bad news out there. It is just nice to hear about something that is going well. Good going Calgary Zoo for all the efforts your staff made to save this chick.
