Conservation officers in Penticton BC have euthanized 5 young adult black bears who were eating garbage that locals leave outside.
The bears had become quite used to the garbage supply and were becoming a danger to local humans. The local humans are the ones who were leaving out the garbage. The bears just wanted to eat enough to be ready for the winter hibernation.

This really was preventable. The bears were attracted to the area by the garbage. If people had stored their garbage properly the bears wouldn't have come and they certainly wouldn't have stayed. The people were careless and lazy and five beautiful bears have paid with their lives.
I think the people should be fined for their failure to store their garbage properly. It doesn't help the bears who have already been killed, but it does send a message to other home owners about garbage. It might save other bears in future if people were more responsible.
