Wuhan Pets
#1
Wuhan China is the epicentre for the corona virus outbreak. This means a lot of things for the people and their pets. People who had planned to be gone a couple of days were caught up in travel restrictions and can't get home to their pets. Volunteers are rescuing those pets and making sure they have food and water.

Sadly some people have chosen to panic and dispose of their pets. In some cases they are throwing them out of windows to lie dead on the streets.

I am glad that there are people out there helping pets in trouble in Wuhan. Fighting the misinformation is going to be harder.
Sadly more pets will probably die before this is over.
The real problem is how focusing on pets as a cause takes away from looking at the actual cause, the wildlife trade and live animal food markets. As long as there are wild animals being sold as food in these live markets, we are going to have virus transmission to humans. Some of the viruses transmitted are going to be deadly like SARS and the Coronavirus. We have to change our behavior if we want this to stop happening.

Every time something like this happens, people's pets suffer.

I know. I was reading about the rescuers. There is a good young man who has been helping to get food to animals left behind when people couldn't get back into Wuhan. Bless him, and all those who are working so hard to help.

Sadly like you say Catherine -every time something like this happens it is innocent pets who suffer. I don't know why.  Dogs and cats and our other pets have nothing to do with coronavirus.

It is desperately sad to see animals treated like this, and cases of people killing them. How horrific.

I think the really horrible reaction is the people who threw their pets out the window. They would have known such terror as they fell and they would not know why it was happening. The pictures of their poor broken bodies is heart breaking.

The pets had nothing to do with the illegal and improper wild animal trade. That is entirely a human action.
