Bringing back the Wooly Mammoth
#1
It is beginning to look like the technology and the financing are there to bring back the wooly mammoth. I know there are ethical considerations around genetic modification and the restoration of extinct species. However there are ecological considerations too.  Wooly Mammoths could have a stabilizing effect on the arctic ecosystem.  The technology has reached a point where it is only a matter of years before the first mammoths are born.
Whether they would really be mammoths  is another issue. They would require genetic material from Asian Elephants.  Would that make them just an adapted Asian Elephant. We won't know until they actually produce specimens.

This article has some good information on the process.

Whenever a key species is returned to an area there is a positive result. Think of the wolves in Yellowstone Park. If there is a chance that mammoths could have that kind of effect on the arctic we need to do it. Mammoths have not been extinct that long. They could fit back into the ecosystem. I think it is worth trying.
Of course I want the mammoths back no matter what. It looks like it is going to happen. Even an adapted form of mammoth might help balance and stabilize the north.  This could have an effect on climate change in a good way.  Now we just have to wait and see if they can do it.
