Fight to keep emotional support pig
#1
Ellie is a pot bellied pig. She lives with and is a support to Wyverne Flatt. He bought her as a tiny piglet and moved to a village in upstate New York. Ellie is now full grown and weights about 110 pounds. She lives in his house with him and is a well behaved family member.
City officials in his village don't see it that way. As far as they are concerned pigs are farm animals. Ellie is a pig, therefore she is a farm animal and is not allowed in their village.
Ellie's presence has helped Wyverne with anxiety and allowed him to get off medication. With her around he is much better. He is putting up a fight to keep her.
The case is actually going to go to court.

This could be a bit of a test case for emotional support  animals. Ellie isn't actually a farm animal. She is the size of a large dog and lives in the house.
It can be shown that she is a help to Wyverne. She is not a problem to the neighbours or the village. They only found out she was living there during a building inspection.
On the other hand there have been abuses of the concept of emotional support animals. People have made some ridiculous claims. It has gotten emotional support animals banned from a lot of airlines.

If a reasonable case can be made and if Ellie can be reasonably accommodated in the village, it will help establish the concept of emotional support animals again.
Hopefully there will be more published once the case goes to trial.  This could have a negative or positive effect on the lives of others living with support animals.
