SPCA Palliative Care Program for aging pets.
#1
The Nova Scotia SPCA has a special palliative program for aging pets. These are older animals that need a loving home for their last years. Unfortunately, they have medical issues that require treatment. It would be too costly for many people to take them on. The palliative care program places the pet in a loving home and covers the medical expenses. This opens up many possibilities for loving homes. The program started with one dog in need and has expanded. The need is even greater now. Even more older animals are being surrendered now. People can't afford to care for an older pet in failing health. Currently there are between 75-100 pets in retirement foster homes.

This is a wonderful idea. Too many people just can't afford their pet when it gets older. Many people who would be willing to adopt an older pet and give it special care, just can't afford the medical costs. This program allows caring people to take an aging pet into their home and care for it without the prohibitive vets' bills.
It is definitely what was needed for the pets and the people. I hope it is an idea that spreads. More places need something like this.
