Feeding bread to wild birds can harm them
#1
Two Mallard Ducks in St Vital in Manitoba were rescued because people reported their condition. They had something called Angelwing.
It is caused by nutritional deficiency. The feathers grow too rapidly, and the wings become deformed. The birds can't migrate south for the winter.  The deficiency is the result of people feeding bread to the birds. The bread doesn't have the right nutrition, it is too high in sugar. Birds that are filled up on bread also don't go on the eat the nutritious foods that they do need.

People mean well. They often think they are doing a good thing. What they are really doing is harming the birds by giving them the wrong food.
There are usually signs all over parks that say, "Don't feed the birds". Maybe what we need are signs that explain why we shouldn't feed the birds. They could even show pictures of birds with deformed wings so we can know what is wrong with feeding the birds. I think if people really understood they would do the right thing.
