"Pet" racoon euthanized after being brought to a Petco store
#1
A woman brought a baby racoon to a Petco store. She wanted its nails clipped. She let people handle the racoon and kiss it.
Petco doesn't clip racoon claws and racoons are sometimes carriers of rabies. The store called the CDC. A number of people were possibly exposed to rabies.
The only way to test the racoon involved euthanasia and testing brain tissue. Rabies is 100% fatal without treatment.  The racoon tested negative.

It is not even legal to have a pet racoon. She could have had it vaccinated for rabies. Taking it to a pet store was a strange thing to do. Letting other people handle the racoon and kiss it was irresponsible. If she had left the racoon in the wild it could still be alive.

When we try to make pets of wildlife it never ends well for the wildlife.
