Decline in the number of strays since spay/neuter program program introduced

The Windsor Essex County Humane Society in southern Ontario was at a breaking point dealing with stray cats in 2011. 
They introduced a spay/neuter program and the stray numbers have dropped by 50%. 
This allows them to care for the cats better and find homes for them. 
This also has an environmental impact. Less cats means less birds being killed. Everyone is happier for the decline in stray numbers, even the cats.
Life as a stray is not a happy life.

If anyone doubts the effectiveness of spay neuter programs, here is proof that they work.
Once you start bringing the numbers down the effects are felt quickly. Hundreds  less kittens are being born.
That compounds over the years. Those kittens that are not born, do not have kittens next year.
If there is any program that cities should be investing in to handle the stray cat problem, it is a spay/neuter clinic.
It is also cost effective. Neutering a few cats now is cheaper than caring for hundreds of strays.
