150 Sable Island horses died last year
#1
150 horses died and that is twice the normal death rate. It was a hard winter and it is thought that the weaker horses died.
It is unsure if this is a good thing for the population in that the stronger horses will have survived. The numbers were fairly high'
It is always worrying when there is a die off. The horses are being closely monitored, but they are living as wild horses. They look after themselves.
It is thought that the sable Island horses are the descendants of the horses that belonged to the Acadians. They were left on Sable Island when the Acadians were deported by the British in the 1750s and 1760s. They have been living on the island for a long time.

The Sable Island horses have been living wild for so long that they are really wild horses now. It is amazing that they have survived on a small island on their own all these centuries.
I hope the die off was just a bit of a population adjustment. I would hate to think of losing the Sable Island horses. They are so much a part of Canadian history.
