Giant Chicken Frog close to extinction.
#1
The Giant Chicken Frog, also known as the Giant Fitch Frog is native to Dominica. It was listed as critically endangered in 2002. Now the population has declined 99%. One of the main reasons for the sudden decline is the deadly Amphibian fungus, Chytridiomycosis. The fungus affects more than 500 frog species around the world. It has caused 90 species extinctions in the last 50 years.
The latest Giant Chicken frog count found only 21 frogs. They had hoped to find 50 frogs.

It looks bad for frogs everywhere, but work is being done to help them. Captive breeding programs are working to increase numbers of frogs.
They are searching for a treatment for the fungus. Some frogs seem to resist it, so there is hope.

One thing we can do is not spread the fungus ourselves. In infected areas we need to be careful to was our footwear when we leave the area and be careful how we dispose of waste. The fungus may be a naturally occurring problem, but we can make sure we don't make it worse.
